Sweating is your horse's main cooling system, and it's a remarkably good one. But unlike simply losing water, horse sweat carries an outsized mineral load with it. Every liter your horse produces during work strips away sodium, chloride, and potassium, the exact electrolytes their nerves and muscles rely on to fire correctly.

For a horse in light, occasional work, that loss usually corrects itself. For horses that sweat lightly, daily dietary salt and minerals may be enough to replace those losses. As workload, heat, hauling, or sweat production increases, electrolyte needs increase with them.

Why Horses Sweat So Much in the First Place


Think about how hard a horse's body works during exercise. Only about 20% of the energy their muscles burn actually turns into movement. The other 80% becomes heat that has to go somewhere (Lisboa et al., 2023). For an animal built with that much muscle, that's a lot of heat to get rid of every time they move.

Horses handle it mostly by sweating, and it's an incredibly efficient system. Sweat evaporation takes care of roughly 65–70% of a horse's cooling during exercise, and quicker breathing handles another 25% or so (Hodgson et al., 1994). During moderate exercise, a horse may lose around 5–7 liters of sweat per hour. During prolonged or strenuous exercise in hot conditions, losses can reach 10–15 liters per hour.

Horse Sweat Isn't Just Salty Water


Here's the part that surprises a lot of riders. Human sweat is fairly dilute, but horse sweat is actually more concentrated in electrolytes than the horse's own blood (McCutcheon & Geor, 1998). One liter of sweat carries about 3.5 g of sodium, 6 g of chloride, and 1.2 g of potassium, plus smaller amounts of calcium and magnesium (McCutcheon & Geor, 1998).

That's the piece that's easy to miss. A horse sweating hard for an hour isn't just drying out. They're steadily losing the minerals that keep their nerves firing and their muscles contracting the way they should.

What Happens When You Don't Replace What's Lost

The research backs this up. Large fluid losses during hard or prolonged work can throw off the ion balance in muscle tissue, and that's linked to problems like tying-up and dips in performance (McCutcheon & Geor, 1998). Dehydration also makes it harder for the body to move heat from the core out to the skin, so a dehydrated horse actually struggles to cool down, which raises the risk of heat-related illness the longer they keep working (Hodgson et al., 1994).

So unreplaced electrolyte loss isn't just a muscle problem. It feeds right back into the overheating problem that started it.

What Actually Helps: Cooling and Electrolytes Together


The research is pretty clear that cooling and electrolyte replacement work best as a team, not as substitutes for one another.

A 2023 study done in hot, humid conditions looked at how horses responded to post-exercise cooling and found that hosing them down with room-temperature water worked well. It brought down rectal temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate, and skin temperature, with continuous water application proving the most practical option for a real barn (Lisboa et al., 2023). More recent research using skin-temperature monitors during exercise has shown just how quickly a horse's surface temperature shifts with workload and weather, a good reminder that cooling down is a process to manage, not a box to check (Verdegaal et al., 2024).

Cooling handles the heat. Electrolytes handle the mineral loss underneath it. You really do need both.

A Simple, Realistic Electrolyte Routine


You don't need a complicated system to get this right. A few habits go a long way:

  • Offer water before, during, and after work. Just don't assume it's doing the whole job on its own.
  • Consider electrolyte replacement when your horse experiences meaningful sweat loss, especially during hard work, prolonged exercise, hauling, or hot weather.
  • Cool actively, not passively. Hosing your horse down works a lot faster than letting them air dry.
  • Choose an electrolyte that actually matches what your horse is losing. Since horse sweat is so heavy in sodium and chloride, a good formula should reflect that, not just be a generic vitamin mix.
